Litteraly it means « bon matin » or « bonne matinée », in Quebec Canada « bon matin » is used a lot but in France not at all. In European French you will say and hear « bonjour » for good morning. « Bonne matinée » is when you say goodbye in the morning like «bye, have a good moring » « au revoir, bonne matinée » « au revoir passez une bonne matinée ». So when you want to say good morning to someone you meet in the morning, just say « bonjour » ! and it's what you'll say to greet during the day until about 5-6 o'clock in the evening. Moreover, you can hear people who add « monsieur » ou « madame » ou in plural « messieurs » ou « mesdames » especially when you greet in a public place where you don't know the person... for example, in the moment you enter a tourist office or you get served in a bakery you will say and or you will hear -« bonjour monsieur qu'est-ce que je vous sers ?» which means « good morning sir, what can I serve you ? » -or « bonjour madame, pourriez-vous m'indiquer l'heure du bus pour paris ? » which means « good morning madam, could you tell me the time of the bus to Paris ?»... and if there are several people of the same sex you'll say -« bonjour mesdames, je vous laisse regarder » which means « good morning ladies, I let you have a look » or -« bonjour messieurs, puis-je faire quelque chose pour vous ? » which means « good morning gentlemen, can I do something for you ? »
