What's the difference between "esse/essa" and "aquele/aquela"?

The translation in English would be: THIS PEN/THIS BOTTLE and THAT PEN/THAT BOTTLE and in the plural: THESE PENS/THESE BOTTLES and THOSE PENS/THOSE BOTTLES.
